Kiwi are fantastic fruits, but the hairy kind everyone knows from grocery stores just don’t grow in the majority of the USA, so we need something that will. Enter the Hardy Kiwi that grows all the way into the Northern states. If you’re a fan of Kiwi like my wife and kids, then get this pack, and enjoy fresh kiwi in your backyard. Needs a strong trellis as these things REALLY grow. This package is best grown in a fantastic wide range of zones 4b-8. Quart potted or Bare root 8″-12″ tall
Geneva 3 – Actinidia arguta
USDA 4b-8
Female (Fruiting) Variety
A highly productive and flavorful kiwiberry variety, ‘Geneva 3’ is the best-performing selection of the ‘Geneva’ series. The medium sized round fruits, olive green with a subdued blush, grow in dense clusters and exhibit exceptional storability. Sweet kiwi and other tropical flavors and aromas abound. The vines will begin to produce in the third season, yielding several pounds at the start and capable of producing, with proper care, in excess of 50 pounds per year when they reach their peak (year 5 and beyond). The fruits mature approximately 10 days to two weeks before those of ‘Ana’, providing a wider harvest range if planting multiple cultivars.
Harvest window: late September to early October
1 Quart potted or Bare root 8″-12″
Ananasnaja (Anna) – Actinidia arguta
USDA 4b-8
Female (Fruiting) Variety
Arriving in the United States from Belgium in 1972, ‘Ana’ is the mainstay of kiwiberry production in the Pacific northwest, thus making it one of the more common varieties found in the market today. The variety bears dense clusters of medium to large sized oblong fruits, with a bright green background and striking red blush under good sun exposure. The flavors are tropical and citrusy, sweet and slightly tart, as reflected in its full name ‘Ananasnaja’ (Russian for “pineapple”). The vines will begin to produce in the third season, yielding several pounds at the start and capable of producing, with proper care, in excess of 50 pounds per year when they reach their peak (year 5 and beyond). Depending on the season, this variety can be susceptible to cosmetic issues (e.g. flyspeck) and off-flavors in the skin.
Harvest window: early to mid October
1 Quart potted or Bare root 8″-12″
Meader – Actinidia arguta
USDA 4b-8
Male (Pollenizing) Variety
A productive male variety which produces large volumes of flowers, ‘Meader Male’ is an excellent match for both ‘Geneva 3’ and ‘Ana’ due to its extended flowering window. Named for New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station researcher Elwyn Meader.
Flowering window: early – late
