If you’re in the south and looking for a beautiful fall color shrub that will produce a lot of delicious berries, look no further! Rabbiteye blueberries are fantastic, hardy, delicious and fun to grow. They’re relatively simple to propagate if you want to get into that. These require acidic soils but you can always build your own acidic soil patch with a few feet of rotted wood and leaf mulch. USDA 6-9. Quart potted or bare root plants 6″-12″ tall
Premier – Vaccinium ashei
USDA 6-9
Premier has some of the most upright and tall growth of the Rabbiteye blueberries I grow. It makes fantastic tasting firm berries with a small and dry scar that lends itself to good storage qualities. We love these for fresh eating, and if they make it far enough through the bucket brigade, they get frozen for smoothies or made into blueberry jam. Grows to 6′-8′ tall when fully grown, sometimes a bit taller. Expect a half gallon to 2 gallons of fruit per bush when mature. Mulch well and fertilize, keep the soil uniformly moist and well drained to get the best results.
Pollination: Powder Blue, Brightwell, Climax
Half Gallon potted or bare root 6″-12″
Powder Blue – Vaccinium ashei
USDA 6-9
Powder Blue is a mid to late season ripening, abundant producer and naturally heat tolerant variety. These shrubs produce medium-sized, sweet, juicy, light blue berries with a soft white dusting in the summer months. Bearing fruit within 2-3 years, this shrub has small white, bell-shaped blossoms that become color-changing berries. These berries start off pink then ripen into medium-sized, light blue, edible berries with a slightly thicker and waxier skin from June – July and produce fruit for over 50 years! Branches are adorned with oval shaped green leaves that turning shades of burgundy to orange in the fall.
Pollination: Tifblue, Brightwell, Climax, Premier, Onslow
Half Gallon potted or bare root 6″-12″
Onslow – Vaccinium ashei
USDA 6-9
Onslow was released in 2001 by North Carolina State University. It is one of the few self-pollinating rabbiteye blueberries, but berries tend to be larger with pollination from either Columbus or De Soto (or other late blooming rabbiteye cultivars). Onslow’s berries are large, and yield is between 9-11# on a mature bush. Berries are bright blue with sweet and aromatic flavor when fully ripe. Like Columbus, the berries are very resistant to cracking in wet weather. Ripening for Onslow in Georgia will be mid-late June through early August. In Kentucky, it will be late July to early September.
Pollination: Self Fertile – produces better with other rabbiteye berries present
Half Gallon potted or bare root 6″-12″
